Below is a description of each level of play to help you decide where you are most comfortable playing.

Intermediate Play:
This competitive level of play encompasses a broad range of skill levels that is generally higher than social play. Players are very familiar with the rules of play and with scoring, are working to develop greater consistency in shot placement, and gaining confidence in executing important shots such as dinks, lobs, overheads, 3 rd shot drop, etc. Players use both forehand and backhand strokes, but the latter may still be somewhat weak and inconsistent. Serves may be faster and some players are learning how to impart spin on the ball and return these shots as well. Play at the Non-Volley Zone (aka kitchen) can at times be fast paced. Players are still learning proper court positioning and how to work with their partner to “set up” their opponents. This is a level of play that can enable players to develop their game faster due to exposure to a wider range of skill levels.

Beginner/ Social Play:
Most players have either taken at least one class or have some experience playing pickleball.  They are familiar with the rules and scoring but may need a refresher. The intent is to gain confidence in all aspects of the game while playing in a social, fun, and non competitive environment of similarly skilled players. Players at this level are still learning basic strategy, ball control and placement, and court positioning. An organized introductory class such as our separate “Learn to Play” sessions are a great way to get introduced to the sport with others who have never played before. Please contact the Waterford Recreation Dept for more information about Learn to Play classes.

Advanced Play:
Players usually have substantial experience playing in a fast paced and competitive game
environment. They have a clear understanding of the rules and scoring of the game, typically execute most types of offensive shots i.e., spins, lobs, overhead slams, dinks, 3 rd shot drops, deep serves, resets etc. with a greater degree of consistency than intermediate players, understand the importance of court positioning particularly when anticipating return shot trajectories, and strive to work more effectively with their partner on both offense and defense.  Players are comfortable using forehand and backhand strokes and aim to improve their consistency and dependability. Serves can be fast with spin making them more difficult to return. Sustained rallies and fast play at the net are commonplace during advanced play.
